To find "white" clay the artists head for the hills surrounding the village of Mata Ortiz, with shovel and bucket in hand. There are different colored deposites of clay in different locations. When going for the "white", what is dug up is never really white.
To acheive a white product, the clay must be soaked in a big trough of water, then washed and re-washed. The more it's washed, the whiter it gets, as soil impurities are swept away.
Jorge Corona Guillen is one of the few artists who are willing to repeat this very labor and time intensive process enough to produce fine creamy white clay for his pottery.
